Looking Up – Psalm 121

Israel – Hill in the Judaean Desert by R.F. Rumbao

I will lift up my eyes to the hills—where does my help come from?1

  • The psalmist is surrounded by hills perhaps on the valley floor, a low place, with no help in sight.
  • Hills and mountains can be obstacles and challenges; a difficult path.
  • Help: succor – to prove, test, thoroughly, to put to proof God’s character and power
  • “I will lift up my eyes…” An act if the will – refusing to be downcast since there is no help in sight; an act of FAITH!2

My help comes from the LORD, the Maker of heaven and earth.3

  • As the mountains surround Jerusalem, so the LORD surrounds his people both now and for evermore.4
  • A revelation of the Spirit.5
  • The Maker of heaven and earth speaks things into being, creating things from His will.6

He will not let your foot slip—he who watches over you will not slumber;7

  • They that trust in the LORD shall be as mount Zion, which cannot be removed, but abideth for ever.8
  • The moving of a foot seems trivial unless you consider how important a foot hold can be; when climbing can it not be a matter of life and death?9  10  11
  • Can we not receive encouragement knowing that God will not slumber, especially in matters of life and death?

indeed, he who watches over Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.12

  • God loves so very much that He works tirelessly to protect us.
